Ruth Davis Fellowship Award

The Ruth Davis Fellowship Award is given annually to support full-time academic work during the summer by advanced doctoral students in the University of Iowa’s Department of Spanish and Portuguese. The award includes a two-month fellowship (of $2,000 per month) and covers summer tuition (2 s.h.)

One fellowship will be granted each year. Awardees are chosen by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese’s Executive Committee.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must:

  • be currently enrolled and in good academic standing;
  • submit a complete application;
  • inform the Committee of other sources of research funding (pending and/or guaranteed) for the summer;
  • have completed all pre-dissertation requirements, including the comprehensive examination and approval of the dissertation prospectus by the application deadline (only doctoral students)

Awards will be based on consideration of the student’s plans for use of the scholarship, the student’s progress towards the degree, evaluation of the student’s grades, and a letter of recommendation from the student’s dissertation advisor.

A Ruth Davis Fellowship Award may be held in conjunction with another grant received for research purposes at the discretion of the Committee. However, recipients of the Graduate College Post-Comprehensive Summer Research Award, Iowa Arts Fellowship, Ballard and Seashore Fellowship, Graduate College Post-Comprehensive Research Award, and Presidential Graduate Fellowship are not eligible.

Applicants are required to submit the following:

  1. A cover letter.
  2. A four-page research or creative project summary, describing the objectives of the project, its methodology, and expected outcomes.
  3. A letter of support from the applicant’s advisor.

The awardee must register for 2 s.h. during the summer session and submit a one-page activity report to the DEO of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese describing the outcome of the research project.

Applications are due on the third Monday of April of each year. This date may be extended at the discretion of the Committee. The winner of the award will be announced by the end of the month.

A one-page activity report must be submitted to the DEO of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese no later than September 15.
