Our faculty offer courses in Spanish, Spanish American, and Latino literature and culture; in Portuguese and Luso-Brazilian literature and culture; and in Hispanic linguistics, while also providing courses in Spanish and in Portuguese language from the introductory to advanced levels.
Imagining Latinidades

This Sawyer Seminar engages questions of Latinidad in the United States. It is driven by one of the greatest challenges to the future of Latina/o Studies—the ways majority culture imagines Latinas/os and the ways these communities, both in response and in resistance, try to imagine themselves. We need the meaning-making, interpretive theories and methods of the humanities to find the intersections of data, laws, fears, fantasies, stories, and lived experience of U.S. Latina/o/x and to map future directions for Latina/o Studies. This is a collaboration between the University of Iowa’s Latina/o Studies Program, the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Latina/o/x Migration

In this one-day symposium — part of our yearlong Mellon Foundation-funded Sawyer Seminar on “Imagining Latinidades: Articulations of National Belonging” — three invited speakers will explore questions related to migration and national belonging.
