Department Scholarships 

Oscar Fernández Scholarship 
Awards up to $1,300

Awarded to currently enrolled juniors or seniors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences majoring in Spanish or Portuguese. Students must demonstrate financial need (students may submit a letter of award notification from the UI Office of Student Financial Aid, or a copy of the most recent FAFSA filed by their parents) and academic excellence. Interested students may nominate themselves or be nominated by a faculty member from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.

Genevieve Davis Searle Scholarship 
Awards $10,000 ($5,000/semester)

Awarded to currently enrolled native English-speaking undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences majoring in Spanish in at least their fifth semester of university study when the award begins. A UI cumulative GPA of 3.6 or higher is required. Students must be studying two consecutive semesters (may include winter/summer term) spent at the college or university in a Spanish-speaking foreign country taking courses resulting in a total of at least 18 s.h. that will be accepted by the University of Iowa.

The Spanish Student Aid Scholarship 
Awards $500

Awarded to a deserving student majoring in Spanish who demonstrates financial need and merit.

 The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences supports numerous scholarships through the college's annual scholarship competition. Students of Spanish and Portuguese should investigate the Esther Walls Scholarship Fund, the James and Syndy Conger Scholarship Fund, and the Oscar Fernández Award. Students of Spanish and Portuguese are also eligible for the Boren Award, which can be used for Study Abroad. 

International Programs

Students majoring in a world language who are participating in a study abroad program or an international internship program through International Programs should investigate the Richard J. Tyner International Programs Scholarship. 

Undergraduate students who study abroad in countries including sub-Saharan Africa, Asia (including Central Asia), Latin America, and the Middle East (including North Africa) should investigate the Joel D. and Sandra Barkan Scholarship. 

Undergraduate students who are committed to developing advanced language proficiency should investigate the Naomi Gunderson Scholarship for Foreign Language Study Abroad.
