Scholarships

Outstanding students are eligible for the following CLAS Scholarships. Students of Spanish and Portuguese should investigate the Esther Walls Scholarship Fund, the James and Syndy Conger Scholarship Fund, and the Oscar Fernández Award. In addition, students of Spanish may qualify for the Genevieve Davis Searle. Students of Spanish and Portuguese are also eligible for the Boren Award, which can be used for Study Abroad.

Applications are customarily due in early February and should be made via the Iowa Scholarship Portal for Undergraduate Students. Please contact the undergraduate advisor or the Office of Academic Programs and Student Development in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for questions regarding the application process.

Oscar Fernández Award
Awards up to $1,500.

Awarded to currently enrolled undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences majoring in Spanish or Portuguese who will have no more than 12 hours completed towards their Spanish or Portuguese major. Students must demonstrate financial need (students may submit a letter of award notification from the UI Office of Student Financial Aid, or a copy of the most recent FAFSA filed by their parents). Interested students may nominate themselves or be nominated by a faculty member from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.

Genevieve Davis Searle Scholarship
Awards $10,000 for two consecutive semesters.

Awarded to currently enrolled native English-speaking undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences majoring in Spanish in at least their fifth semester of university study when the award begins. A UI cumulative GPA of 3.5 is required. Students must be studying in a Spanish-speaking country for one or two semesters and earning at least 18 s.h. of credit.
