Biography

1949-2026

Maria Angelina Duarte (Associate Professor of Portuguese Emerita) taught Portuguese and Brazilian literature and Portuguese language in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Iowa from 1983 to 2015. Duarte edited an edition of Idealista no Mundo Real by Portuguese writer José Rodrigues Miguéis (first edition, 1986) and co-authored with Ronald W. Sousa the monograph Reading the Harper: On a Portuguese Immigrant Poem from California, 1901 (1997).

Duarte held a PhD in Spanish (University of Minnesota, 1980), MA in Portuguese (University of Texas, 1974), and a double BA in Portuguese and Sociology (Vanderbilt University, 1971). She served for five years (1985 1990) as the Executive Director of the Midwest Modern Language Association (MMLA).

At the University of Iowa, Duarte served as Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, from 1995 to 1998, as the departmental Director of Undergraduate Studies for multiple terms, and as a member of Latin American Studies Program throughout her time at the University. In 2011, she received a Collegiate Teaching Award. Maria Angelina Duarte was a wonderful colleague, known for her quick wit, her fine sense of irony, and her kindness.
